Sociology 3990/3991: Field Experience

The field experience program gives students a chance to explore sociology in the "real" world. Students find internships in a wide range of fields, including criminal justice, medical, communications, and marketing, and they analyze their experiences from a sociological perspective. Here is some information about the class that students might find helpful.

Class syllabus

How does it work?

The program is split into two classes: Soci 3990 and Soci 3991

Soci 3990 is the hourly portion of the program. It is graded satisfactory/ unsatisfactory, and the only requirements are that you complete the necessary hours and you receive an acceptable evaluation from your on-site supervisor. For hours, you need to do 42 hours of internship for every credit of Soci 3990.

Soci 3991 is the academic portion. It is graded on a regular A through F scale, and for it students write a paper(s). Typically students sign up for one credit of it.

Note: Only 3 credits of Soci 3990/3991 can be counted toward the sociology major. (Any more will count, however, toward the 45-credit rule).

When is Soci 3990/3991 offered? Each semester and during summer as well.

How to sign up for Soci Soci 3990/3991? During class registration, the department puts out an application form, and you can pick it up from Kathy Covey, Department of Sociology office, first floor Manchester Hall.
